Nurses around the world and across the world are working tirelessly through this health crisis, day and night, to care for extremely sick patients.

As much as nurses have been giving of their care and time recently, a lot of people have been looking for ways to give back to them and the medical community. If you’re finding yourself wanting to make a difference and support nurses, here’s 10 ideas for things you can do.

1. Donate Supplies

There’s a dangerous personal protective equipment (PPE) shortage right now. Nurses often have no choice but to perform their job functions with limited access to masks, sanitizers, gloves, gowns, and face shields. If you have extra supplies or access to supplies, consider donating them to local nurses and hospitals.

2. Venmo Money for Lunch or Coffee

Want to know a great way to make a nurse’s day? Buy them lunch or coffee! A quick Venmo payment to a hardworking nurse you know will brighten their day and let them know you’re thinking of them.

3. Donate

If you are financially able to, there are some great programs collecting donations and helping medical organizations currently battling COVID-19. Check out this list here for where you can donate.

4. Go Shopping

Nurses providing COVID-19 care are finding themselves with little time to do much else these days. If you have the time and capacity to, consider dropping off groceries and supplies for them – safely distanced, of course. They’ll be grateful of the help, and potentially the extra moment to rest.

5. Volunteer

Looking for ways to get involved? Consider volunteering with your local Red Cross chapter, helping with testing sites, assisting with blood drives, or delivering much-needed supplies. If you’re a nurse, we’ve also compiled a list of organizations you can volunteer with here.

6. Cover Parking Fees

Surprisingly, a lot of nurses (especially nursing students) are still having to pay to park at the facilities they’re working in. Call local facilities to see how you can help cover these fees, or if there is anything else they’re in need of.

7. Schedule Meals for the Hospital

If you’re financially able, scheduling to have a meal delivered to a medical team is a great way to reach out and support nurses and healthcare workers. Reaching out and keeping our frontline heroes nourished is one of the best ways to help at this time.

8. Donate Blood

According to the Red Cross, there’s a dangerous shortage of blood currently. If you’re interested in finding out how to donate blood, you can learn how here.

9. Offer Encouragement

Whether it’s through social media, or a website, sending your words of hope and encouragement means a lot to nurses. Check with your local hospitals; Many of them have set up ways to communicate directly with their care staff to offer kind words.

10. #StayHome

One of the absolute best things you can do to support nurses and the healthcare community is to stay home as often as you can to stay healthy, reduce transmission rates, and keep people out of hospitals.
